First edition Sustainable Career Fair 2026

Last Tuesday, 12th of May, the very first edition of the Sustainable Career Fair took place at The Social Hub in Maastricht. Organised by KAN and SDG House Maastricht, the event brought together students, professionals, and organisations for a day full of inspiration, connection, and meaningful conversations.

The day started with an inspiring keynote by Ramona Corvers on behalf of Welcome to Maastricht Region. Her story highlighted an important question: ‘‘Maastricht Region: the edge of the Netherlands or the gateway to Europe?’’ It was a powerful perspective that started conversations about opportunities, inclusion, and the position of internationals in the region.

This was followed by an engaging panel discussion featuring Jules Ortjens council member Volt, Ramona Corvers program leader Welcome to Maastricht Region, Eva Slootweg-Broekhuis Senior HR-professional, and Julio César Croce Martínez UM graduate currently under an orientation year visa. Together, they shared different perspectives on challenges international students face, how to position yourself in the Dutch job market, and personal experiences from their own professional journeys.

After the collective programme, participants joined interactive workshops focused on mapping a sustainable future, navigating the Dutch job market, and preparing for job interviews. Attendees also had the opportunity to receive CV feedback, take professional photos in the photobooth, or connect with organisations throughout the stands of the career fair.

Several inspiring organisations contributed to the career fair with their stands. Dress For Success Maastricht offered personal colour analyses and advice on professional dressing, helping students discover how to make a strong first impression. Buddy system Sittard-Geleen shared information about their initiatives supporting internationals and strengthening community connections. IVN Limburg contributed insights on sustainability and community engagement, while AIESEC inspired students with international opportunities and leadership development. UM Language Center highlighted the importance of language skills and intercultural communication in career development, and UM Career Service Center supported students with career guidance and practical advice for entering the labour market.

The students shared their experience, ‘‘super useful’’, ‘‘good quality workshops’’, and ‘‘I really liked the diversity of the program’’, highlighting the value of creating a space where sustainability and positive impact are at the centre.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to making this first edition of the Sustainable Career Fair such a success. From the organisations and speakers to all participants and volunteers. Together, we created a space for connection, growth, and future opportunities.🌱
